Working out of public view this morning, President Trump signed a revised executive order that is intended to replace his previous order deemed unconstitutional by several federal courts. Little has changed. Today’s order once again temporarily shuts down the U.S. refugee resettlement program, cuts the number of refugees admitted by more than half, and bans entry by immigrants and refugees to the U.S. from six predominantly Muslim countries—including war-torn Syria. Like the prior order, this one proposes steps that endanger the safety and wellbeing of children and families. It clearly undermines our identity as a land of opportunity for immigrants and refugees and once again poses constitutional questions about discrimination by national origin and religion.

The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) rejects these harmful, misguided policies that seek to further divide our communities and infringe upon the constitutional rights of America’s immigrant, refugee, and Muslim communities. At a time of global crisis, it is shameful that our president would betray America’s proud history as a safe haven for refugees by turning his back on vulnerable children and families fleeing persecution.

CLASP stands with immigrants and refugees as well as those who serve them. We will continue to work closely with advocacy and legal partners at the federal, state, and local levels to push back on this and other destructive proposals. And we urge all who care about children and families, as well as justice and opportunity, to reach out to Congress and state and local decision makers to fight back against these damaging proposals.
