Supreme Court preserves birthright citizenship

“Birthright citizenship provides clarity and stability at birth, helping ensure infants can access essential screenings, vaccinations and medical care without new barriers or uncertainty regarding their citizenship status,” Wendy D. Cervantes, MA, told Healio.
“The stakes in this case were profound,” Cervantes, director of immigration and immigrant families at the Center for Law and Social Policy, a nonprofit that advocates for policies that help low-income families, said in a press release after the ruling was announced. “Had birthright citizenship been narrowed, hundreds of thousands of babies born in the United States each year could have faced uncertainty about their citizenship status because of their parents’ immigration status.”

“Any effort to roll back birthright citizenship harms only one population: babies,” Cervantes told Healio. “Birthright citizenship is one way that our country has gotten it right when it comes to kids; it provides all babies some form of equal footing from the start.”
