Opinion: Child tax credits will work — if the intended recipients can access them

The expanded child tax credit (CTC) will dramatically reduce child poverty, especially for Black, Latinx and Indigenous children. But requiring parents to file a tax return to get the credit will make it harder for the lowest-income families to access it.

I’m ecstatic that the Internal Revenue Service will create an online portal for parents who don’t normally file taxes to get the credit. This will be a critical tool for parents who earn little to no income, who aren’t required to file a return and who face the greatest barriers to filing.
