Federal Report Agrees Some Low-Income College Students Are Going Hungry

Carrie Welton was quoted in Inside Higher Ed on the recent GAO report and the need for increased SNAP support for college students. 

“The GAO’s estimate of about two million students who are potentially eligible for SNAP seems too conservative, said Carrie Welton, a policy analyst at the Center for Law and Social Policy. ‘What they recommended is probably the bare minimum Food and Nutrition Service can do,’ she said, adding that states should do a better job of clarifying the eligibility rules for SNAP. ‘We’ve been working with multiple states to help them clarify the rules and improve postsecondary benefits in their states.’ Welton said she supports rolling back exemptions that prevent many students from taking advantage of SNAP.”
