Nationwide, 1 in 4 children under the age of 6 has at least one foreign-born parent, according to The Center for Law and Social Policy. The vast majority of these children of immigrants — 96 percent — are American citizens. (The Hechinger Report is not using the full names of some of those interviewed because they fear for their safety.)
