Within our broad anti-poverty mission, CLASP’s staff of about 40 people is organized around four policy teams (Child Care and Early Education; Education, Labor & Worker Justice; Immigration and Immigrant Families; and Public Benefits Justice), supported by cross-cutting teams that specialize in Communications, Legislative Affairs, Development, Finance and Administration, and Human Resources. The Finance and Administration team works closely with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director in a confidential capacity to assist management to formulate and execute policies and strategy, including in financial analysis as it pertains to collective bargaining.
Position Overview
The Senior Accounting and Finance Manager will support the organization’s financial operations, assist with compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, and manage day-to-day financial processes including sensitive financial and employee information. This role will also support budgeting, financial reporting, grants management, and reconciliation through good internal controls and with transparency. The ideal candidate has experience in nonprofit grant reporting, a strong understanding of GAAP and fund accounting, and a commitment to the organization’s mission. This position is a Confidential position within our unionized environment and reports to the COO.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Assist with budgeting, reporting, monthly reconciliation preparation, accounts payable and accounts receivable, and expense management.
- Track department budgets and collaborate with departments to forecast future expenses.
- Prepare financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with nonprofit financial standards.
- Assist in the development and monitoring of financial policies and procedures to improve efficiency and ensure compliance.
Grant & Fund Management
- Work closely with program directors and development staff to create grant proposal budgets.
- Track grant expenses and prepare interim and final expenditure reports for submission to funders.
- Ensure compliance with grant and funder requirements, maintaining detailed financial records for audits and reporting.
Reconciliation & Expense Management
- Reconcile accounts receivable and prepare financial data for external accounting reconciliation.
- Work with staff to ensure monthly reconciliation of credit card expenses.
- Assist with staff expense reimbursement submissions and payment processing through Tallie and Bill.com.
- Prior to final payment, review expense documentation in Bill.com, ensuring accuracy and proper general ledger allocation.
Audit & Compliance
- Assist with the annual financial audit, working closely with external auditors to provide necessary and sensitive documentation.
- Provide financial content for federal Form 990 filing and other regulatory reports.
- Adhere to nonprofit accounting best practices, internal controls, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (CPA certification desired but not required).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and nonprofit financial management.
- Experience with grant accounting, budget development, and financial reporting for funders.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct) and financial management platforms (Bill.com, Tallie, Excel).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and communicate financial concepts to non-finance staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of payroll systems and HRIS financial integration.
- Familiarity with unionized work environments and labor agreements.
UNION ENVIRONMENT AND POSITION STATUS
CLASP is a unionized organization, but this position is not part of the bargaining unit. It operates in a union environment where employees are represented by CLASP Workers United (OPEIU, Local 2). CLASP values collaboration, fair labor practices, and constructive engagement with the union. We are currently negotiating our first Collective Bargaining Agreement, though this position is not union-represented.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $95,000 – $110,000
Salary is commensurate with experience.
