Among poor young adults, 40% receive SNAP benefits and 4% receive some form of welfare assistance.

The 2011 poverty rate for adults within the age range of 18 to 24 is 20.6 percent. About 1/3 of young adults live in shared households where young adult income is counted as part of the larger family income or counted together with roommates' income. If poverty was assessed solely on an individual young adult's income, the overall poverty rate for this group may actually be much higher.
