Employment of single mothers declining

The employment rates for single mothers increased from 57.3 percent in 1993 to a record 72.8 percent in 2000.  After that progress stalled, with employment rates falling slowly, to 69.1 percent in 2008.   In 2009, with the recession in full swing, employment of single mothers fell to 65.8 percent -- Thomas Gabe, Congressional Research Service, "Trends in Welfare, Work and the Economic Well-Being of Female-Headed Families with Children, 1987-2008."
