        <title>New Survey Shows How States are Keeping Adult Education Afloat Amid Declining Budgets and Changing Skill Demands</title>

        <description>At no time in recent history has the importance of adult education been greater and the funding more threatened. Despite the fact that as many as 93 million adults in the U.S. may need basic skills services to improve their economic prospects, funding for these services is stagnating at the federal level and being slashed in statehouses and state agencies across the country. Demand remains high, with waiting lists in nearly every state. New findings from a national survey of adult education state directors, conducted jointly by CLASP and the National Council for State Directors of Adult Education (NCSDAE), shed light on key financing and tuition policies, including how programs are funded and how much money is propping up the system from all levels of government, local programs, and students themselves.</description>

The efforts are culminating with the National Workforce Week of Action Aug. 15 to 19.</description>

        <title>Cuts to Adult Education Would Harm More Than Just Students</title>

        <description>For nearly 90 million low-skilled adults in the U.S., the chance at a better life rests on their access to education that can help them upgrade their skills, earn a high school diploma or GED, prepare for college and get a better job. One of the largest sources of educational funds available for these students is adult education funding provided through the Workforce Investment Act.  Adult education is a significant and invaluable asset to our nationaEUR(TM)s recovery and future prosperity, yet pressure to make deep cuts to discretionary spendingaEUR"including education programsaEUR"could threaten their very existence. Programs to help low-skilled students upgrade their skills are historically underfunded and continue to fall victim to budget cuts. In recent years, these programs have been kept alive because of generous state and local funding. But as state and local budgets decline, little funding remains for education to low-skilled adults and youth who need to upgrade their skills to compete for jobs.</description>
