Developmental Education Completion Rates

Many students who begin to pursue college coursework end up in developmental education-often a costly and time-consuming dead end. Only three to four out of ten students who are referred to developmental education actually complete the entire sequence of recommended courses. Outcomes are the worst for those most in need of remediation: only one-fifth of those assessed as needing three or more developmental education courses in an academic area actually complete them. Some students are less likely to complete than others, including men, African-Americans, older students, part-time students, and students in occupational programs.
