Unwed Dads in the Inner City: What's Changed and Why it Matters

Do urban poor dads live up to their image as "dead-beats" or do they really care about their kids? Often vilified across the political spectrum, unwed fathers in the inner city are the subject of a paradigm-shifting study and book, Doing the Best they Can: Fatherhood in the Inner City. The authors Kathryn Edin, professor of public policy and management, and Timothy J. Nelson, lecturer in social policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, conclude that we all should take another look at the father-child bond in the inner city and its critical importance to our nation.

This document looks at select provisions in the Recovery Act that affected low-income people and their families. In areas where there is available data, it notes the impact of the program on the number of people who benefited from ARRA provisions. While the effect of the Recovery Act will be debated and analyzed by policy experts and researchers for years to come, some of the early evidence makes it clear that the Recovery Act benefited the nation by easing some immediate effects of the recession and preventing deeper hardship.
